Schedule of 2023/24 and recap of 2022/23

California Christmas Bird Counts

DECEMBER 14, 2023 - JANUARY 5, 2024

Home     Index     Checklist     Taxonomy     Photo Checklist     CBC's     Birding

Participants are normally assigned to areas based on their bird identification skill level and endurance. The count results are published online only by National Audubon and Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Most counts are generally weather permitting so make sure you contact your compiler to verify that the count hasn't been postponed or cancelled.

I have been compiling these CBC lists for 24 years. This information is compiled and funded by Alison Sheehey, send pertinent info/updates to me: natureali@gmail.com. Thanks to Alex Coffey for chasing down many of the dates.

NOTE TO COMPILERS: Something to consider, for the count I compile, I have a dedicated Gmail account and eBird account solely for the CBC. All counters share their checklists to the account with no compiler contact other than via phone and email.

Send CBC rare bird and special aspect reports to the California CBC editor, John Sterling; jsterling@wavecable.com

If you see a banded PELICAN please contact: International Bird Rescue - Blue-Banded Pelican Program with the data. https://www.birdrescue.org/contact/found-a-bird/reporting-a-banded-bird/

Other Banded Birds can be reported to: https://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/BBL/bblretrv/

December 14, 2023 - January 5, 2024

Schedule by Date

COUNT NAMES ARE CONFIRMED in the list below. TBD counts below the main list. No program to write this so the content may be a little wonky as I am hand coding for now.

This season only brings three weekends for counts, if you are a compiler, please send natureali@gmail.com your dates as soon as you know them.

PLEASE CONTACT COMPILERS WELL IN ADVANCE, SO THEY MAY PLAN ACCORDING TO THE NUMBER AND EXPERTISE OF PARTICIPANTS. Some counts have a formal registration process, most links take you to the count pages (some may not function).
