Nature Trail Guide  Birds of KNWR     Mammals of KNWR

On Saturday June 2, 2001, Tulare County Audubon Society and the staff of the Pixley National Wildlife Refuge dedicated a new nature trail at the previously closed refuge. This remarkable step was made possible by the dedication of volunteers from the TCAS.

David Hardt, Manager of the Kern National Wildlife Refuge Complex is giving the dedication speech. Barbara Hopkins of Tulare County Audubon  Society gave a speech on the wonders of the central valley.

Viewing platform built by volunteers from TCAS. June 2001

Volunteers from Tulare County Audubon Society and Kern National Wildlife Refuge built this handicapped accessible viewing platform that overlooks the marshes. Wintering waterfowl, and cranes can easily been seen from this vantage point.

Colorful information signs are strategically placed along the trail. Pixley NWR is one of the last undisturbed habitats for many of these birds and other wildlife.

Not just feathery friends but leathery friends as well. Dave Hardt discussing the California Kingsnake's musk gland. Kind of stinky.

Ducks Unlimited has also provided support for wetlands projects throughout North America. It takes the cooperation of many dedicated individuals and groups to keep part of America wild. Won't you volunteer to help today?
