I drove from Mesa Verde in southern Colorado to Canyon de Chelly along US 160 to US 191 during the night. The amazing thing about the Navajo Nation is how remote it remains. Light pollution is not a problem at all, but you have to be wise about purchasing gasoline as little enclaves with stores are very far apart. Canyon de Chelly is a National Monument with a catch... it is run by the Navajo and they have special tours to the interior which apparently are really quite amazing. I didn't have the funds to spare for extras on this trip, but from what I heard the tour is well worth going on. You not only get to visit private locations but you also get the experience of native interpretation of the history from the culture that continues to live with many of the traditions of their ancestors. There were some really cool artistans selling a variety of things. One of my most favorite items were the petroglyph rocks. A woman named Paula Whitney had some great pieces and on the back she interpreted what the glyphs meant. The most special rock was created by a young boy named Hansen Williams down by the White House. He had pecked interpretations of the Spider Rock. I thought he was so charming, I do hope for a wonderful future for this young man. |
