Isn't all massage the same?

Do you suffer from aches and pains?
Have you been to doctor after doctor looking for relief? Maybe you have even tried acupuncture, shiatsu, massage, chiropractic, or another type of alternative therapy that just didn’t quite work.

muscle manThe human body is composed of over 40% muscle. Muscle tissue that is injured, overused, or underused can ache and burn so intensely that you may feel seriously injured. Many health practitioners (friends and family members as well) act as if pain is real only when there are visible injuries. But in fact, your body may appear undamaged, but muscle can still be traumatized. Knowing that the pain has an organic cause (it's in your muscle, not all in your head) can relieve a lot of anxiety.

What are Trigger Points?

Trigger points are hypersensitive areas within muscle which become knotted, inelastic, and unable to relax. The classical signs of trigger points are deep-aching muscle tenderness, loss of range of motion, referral of pain to other areas, and muscle weakness. Shortening and loss of range of motion caused by trigger points can be accompanied by pain or they may lie dormant. Muscles shortened due to trigger points will lose strength and stamina. As Dr. Janet Travell (the original researcher of trigger point pathology and White House Physician to JFK) said, "If a muscle is long, it will be strong."

What does a trigger point feel like? Most people can readily find trigger points in the fleshy area between the base of the neck and the shoulder. Feeling around, you may find areas that feel knotted and hard. Pressure on these knots can cause the sudden appearance of headache, shoulder, or arm pain. This knot is a trigger point.headache

A professional Trigger Point Myotherapist can relieve many pains that you may think unrelated to muscular problems. Myofascial (myo = muscle, fascial = connective tissue) therapy can relieve pain mimicking sciatica, migraines, toothaches, abdominal pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, TMJ, as well as many other conditions.

What is Trigger Point Myotherapy?

Trigger point myotherapy is a non-invasive form of myofascial treatment. It involves the application of moderate pressure directly over the sensitive trigger point. Most people report the sensation "hurts good." Myofascial treatment comes in four forms: injection therapy, dry needling, spray and stretch, and ischemic compression (pressure). Trigger point therapy is done to release the tension in muscle and re-infuse the tissue with normal body fluids. These treatments are followed by a therapeutic stretching program which reestablishes a pain-free and normal range of motion. Myotherapy begins the process of  restoration of muscle tissue to a healthy state.

NOTICE: Unfortunately I know very few myotherapists across the country. I cannot help people find therapists, but the information on this page can help you find someone yourself. If you are looking for someone in your area to help treat your condition, please print this page and use it to interview massage/physical therapists and/or doctors. Some individuals claim to perform trigger point therapy when they have no real knowledge of the physiological mechanisms causing pain referral. Look for people with knowledge of the Travell-Simons protocols and who use the correct terminology of trigger points. Good luck.

MESSAGE FROM ALI: I CARE ABOUT YOU AND YOUR HEALTH - BUT I AM CONCERNED THAT TOO MANY PEOPLE THINK ONLY OF THEMSELVES AND TREAT THIS PLANET AND THE NEED FOR STUFF AS A RIGHT. PLEASE REALIZE THAT WE ALL LIVE HERE AND DRIVING GAS GUZZLING SUV'S, NOT TAKING CARE OF POSSESSIONS, AND MAKING OTHERS LIVE WITH THE OVERWHELMING POLLUTION OF AIR, WATER, SOUND AND LIGHT THAT ALL OF US CAUSE, IS ONE OF THE REASONS THERE ARE SO MANY UNHEALTHY PEOPLE.

PLEASE STOP AND THINK ABOUT YOUR IMPACT TO ALL OF YOUR FELLOW BEINGS AND TO THE LEGACY OF THIS PLANET. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND ALL WHO RELY ON YOU. I HOPE THAT THE ALL OF YOU WILL CARRY ON AS GOOD CITIZEN'S OF THIS LOVELY PLANET.
