Sequoia National Forest Research Natural Areas, Geological Areas and Botanical Areas

Church Dome Research Natural Area on the Cannell Meadow portion of the Kern River District is an established area. Consists of 1465  acres of Jeffery Pine and Desert Woodland. The lithology is basalt.  It is found on the southeastern edge of the Kern Plateau near Big Meadow.

Long Canyon Research Natural Area is on the Greenhorn portion of the Kern River Ranger District. It is proposed to consist of 2131 acres of Piute Cypress and Desert Chaparral habitats. Its lithology is limestone. It is found on the most northerly reaches of the Piute Mountains near Dry Meadow.

Moses Mountain Research Natural Area is on the Tule River Ranger District. It is an established area consisting of 960 acres of Giant Sequoia, Mixed-Fir Forest, and Meadow habitats.

South Mountaineer Creek Research Natural Area is on the Tule River 1576 Red Fir, Sub-Alpine Forest, Meadow Proposed

Baker Point Botanical Area is on the Hot Springs/Greenhorn portion of the Kern River Ranger District. 826 Rare Plants, Granite Lithology Established

Bald Mountain Botanical Area is on the Cannell Meadow portion of the Kern River District is an established area. 446 Rare Plants, Schist/Hornfels Lithology Established

Bodfish Piute Cypress Botanical Area is on the Greenhorn portion of the Kern River Ranger District. It is an established area consisting of 310 acres of Piute Cypress. The lithology is Gabbro/Hornblende. It is found on the western edge of the Piute Mountains bisected by Saddle Springs Road.

Ernest C. Twisselmann Botanical Area is on the Cannell Meadow portion of the Kern River District. It is an established area consisting of 860 acres of Foxtail Pine, Rare Plants, Granite Lithology Established

Freeman Creek Grove Botanical Area is on the Tule River 1434 Eastern-most Giant Sequoia Grove, Basalt Proposed

Inspiration Point Botanical Area is on the Greenhorn portion of the Kern River Ranger District. It is an established area consisting of 270 acres of Rare Plants. Limestone//Hornfels Geology Established. It is found in the center of the Piute Mountains near Alaska Flat.

Slate Mountain Botanical Area is on the Tule River 500 Rare Plant Hotspot, Slate/Gneiss Lithology Established
