Back to serious driving and an attempt to photograph the final two Audubon sanctuaries of this adventure. Wattis Sanctuary is in Butte County next to Gray Lodge Wildlife Area, try as I might I never found that one, but did find Gray Lodge. What a fantastic place!!! Thousands of snow and Ross's geese clustered together everywhere. I spent the last few minutes of daylight in awe of the sheer numbers of waterfowl at this place. Then... the best sunset I have ever seen.. and then it seemed all of the geese lifted from the water simultaneously and filled the sky with a symphony of snow goose song amidst the crimson sky. ahhh, what a joyous end to the day. The end of another great day

On to Stockton and the Central Valley Bird Symposium. So many friends, Barbara, Bob, Kimball, John, Cheri, David, Bruce, Les, Joanie, Waldo, Sue, and Bethie. So many people of such acclaim and birding prowess, of any group of people these people feel like family, and I am so happy to be among them. I enjoy being among friends, but again, I am determined to fulfill my mission of photographing the northern California Audubon Sanctuaries and have yet to visit Bobelaine. Instead of joining my friends, I head out in the morning solo to finish my task. I am not disappointed with this lovely Yuba County sanctuary which is bounded by orchards on one side and the Feather River on the other. A valley oak riparian woodland, the sanctuary has several trails and a little lake that was filled with egrets and cormorants. Wild grapes were draping many trees with the rich red of fall foliage. Vultures and hawks circled overhead. Woodpeckers, nuthatches, and titmice busily foraged in the lush forest. Poison oak sneakily had lost its leaves letting me know that I would remember this trip for weeks and maybe months after it was over, itch, itch, scratch, scratch, :-? What is an extremely allergic naturalist to do?
