Sandra Wieser and I
covered the town of Onyx and Sprague Ranch. At Onyx's Scodie Park and within a
block of the park we saw nine species of woodpeckers. White-headed, Downy,
Hairy, Nuttall's and Acorn Woodpeckers, Red-breasted, Red-naped and Williamson's
Sapsuckers and Northern Flicker. Other teams also saw Ladder-backed Woodpecker
making this a ten woodpecker count. (The next day on the Kern Valley Count we
had a Yellow-shafted Flicker). Both species of bluebird, Mountain and Western
were fairly abundant on Sprague Ranch. The team of Frank Gibson, David Chilton,
and Don Storm had three species of Zonotrichia at one feeder on Fay Ranch
Road; White-throated, White-crowned, and Golden-crowned Sparrows. Ferruginous
Hawks were almost as common as Red-tailed Hawks, and a report of a very rare
Rough-legged Hawk over Canebrake Ecological Preserve thrilled those who saw it.
Susan Steele gets the exercise award as she hike up Short Canyon to the
ridgeline and then down Cholla Canyon... whew!
Thanks to
Frank Gibson for scouting with me on Friday. Many of the species
found then allowed our team to refind many of the woodpeckers easily
on count day.
